Background

During the COVID pandemic, when colleges and universities remained closed, students across Rajasthan were still forced to pay unjust fees. Responding to this exploitation, Student Union President Ravindra Singh Bhati
led a major protest movement to defend students’ rights.

Instead of addressing the concerns, the university administration suspended Bhati, and the police used lathicharge and registered cases against protesting students.

Rise of Chhatra Kranti

At a time of severe economic pressure on families, Bhati expanded the struggle into a statewide movement under the banner of “Chhatra Kranti”. The movement grew rapidly:

  • 26 districts reached
  • More than 100 tehsils participated
  • Over 5 lakh students united in the cause

Memorandums addressed to the Governor were submitted across district headquarters,
while massive mobilization was initiated for a Legislative Assembly protest.

Historic Vidhansabha Gherav

On 13 September, thousands of students answered the call and gathered outside the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly to press for their demands. The agitation marked a powerful show of unity during the pandemic.

Victory for Students

The government ultimately withdrew its decision and accepted the students’ demands — a historic victory for the student community. Chhatra Kranti remains one of the largest student movements in Rajasthan’s history during the COVID era.
